Richard L. Hudson, ’96

Distinguished Alumnus Award
Congressman Richard Hudson caught the political bug early in life. His first memory in politics was standing in front of a Roanoke Rapids fire station helping his grandfather campaign for re-election to the city council, where he served for 30 years. “He was a man of such high integrity, strong faith, and love for his family,” says Richard. “I try to emulate him every day.”
That taste for politics never left, as Richard went on to be elected Student Body President at UNC Charlotte and eventually became the first graduate from the university to serve in the United States Congress, currently in his second term representing North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District.
A graduate of Myers Park High School in Charlotte, he earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in History and Political Science at UNC Charlotte.
After graduation, Richard worked as a political and governmental affairs strategist advising several elected officials, policymakers, and campaigns in North Carolina. He worked for Richard Vinroot’s gubernatorial campaign; was communications director for the North Carolina GOP; and served as North Carolina’s 8th District Director for Congressman Robin Hayes, where he oversaw the Congressman’s North Carolina offices for six years. He also served as a Chief of Staff for three different members of Congress.
In 2012, Richard was elected to his first term in Congress. He currently serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and has served on the House Agriculture Committee, the Education and Workforce Committee, and the Homeland Security Committee. His interest in the topic of human trafficking is related to two pieces of legislation that he has co-sponsored: The SAVE Act and The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
Richard often speaks about the value of his time and education at UNC Charlotte and how deeply he cares for the University, having previously served as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors. His office in Washington, DC proudly displays his diploma and a 49ers jersey. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, he has tried to highlight some of the university’s energy and advanced manufacturing initiatives.
“Congressman Hudson has proven to be an example of leadership and a dedicated public servant,” says fellow alumus Fred Steen ’86, Legislative Liaison to Governor Pat McCrory. “I have no doubt he will continue to serve this university and our community with distinction and honor.”
