49er License Plate

Take your Niner spirit wherever you go while also supporting your University! For every UNC Charlotte specialty license plate purchased in the state of North Carolina, a $15 annual fee is used to support critical student scholarships.

Any North Carolina resident with a valid driver’s license may purchase a UNC Charlotte specialty plate.

Plate Update:  The NCDMV has received the new branding for Charlotte, and plates are now ready to be ordered!  If you have an old plate, you can wait until time to renew and request a new plate for no extra fee, or you can get a new plate early for an extra fee.  You can do this online or at a tag office, or by mail when renewing.

To date, the license plate program has raised more than $100,000 for the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Scholarship and has helped provide scholarships to numerous UNC Charlotte students. This scholarship was established to provide financial support to high-achieving student scholars who are leaders on our campus, in our community and beyond.

“The freedom to pursue an education, while easy to take for granted, is an immeasurably impactful privilege,” said Nathan Hewitt, a 2019 recipient of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Scholarship.

Nathan, who is majoring in computer engineering and was one of only ten U.S. students selected to attend the Technology, Innovation and Creativity Fulbright Summer Institute in Glasgow, Scotland, credits this scholarship for making his education possible.

“Through the Alumni Association Scholarship, alumni have contributed to this freedom, which I am overwhelmingly grateful for. Without this award, I would need to take out more loans to continue my education, which would only increase the amount of debt I would face upon graduating.”

As an undergraduate research assistant in the VisionLab at UNC Charlotte, Nathan aims to use engineering to solve pressing human-centered issues, and he is currently writing code that will be used to rebuild complex bone fractures. He’s especially passionate about technology’s role in supporting the most vulnerable of populations. And, the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Scholarship is helping to make his research possible.

Support students like Nathan, while also riding with pride, by purchasing a 49er license plate!

In addition to the standard vehicle registration fees, the specialized UNC Charlotte license plate is only $25 a year for a regular plate and $55 for a personalized one. In accordance with the North Carolina DMV statute, $15 of the $25 fee will be returned to the University for scholarship funds.

Important note: None of the fees for the personalized plates come back to the University.
