Trio of Charlotte 49ers baseball players selected in 2025 MLB Draft

Blake Gillespie, Logan Poteet and Joel Sarver were selected during the recent 2025 Major League Baseball Draft. Gillespie was the first 49er taken in the ninth round as the 284th pick, before Poteet and Sarver went in the 17th round to make it five consecutive years Charlotte 49ers baseball has had multiple players drafted.
Gillespie, a right-handed pitcher picked by the New York Yankees, turned in one of the best seasons the American Athletic Conference has seen on the mound. He posted a 2.42 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 100.1 innings pitched this year, tied for the third-most strikeouts of any pitcher in conference history and the third-most in the country this year prior to the start of NCAA Regionals. Gillespie’s 131 strikeouts were the fourth-most in a single season in program history.
Poteet, a catcher, was the 511th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs. He achieved one of the best defensive catching performances in recent history for the 49ers, throwing out 22 runners trying to steal this year. Additionally, he helped backstop the 49ers to only two passed balls and 23 wild pitches allowed — tying for the fewest passed balls surrendered and the third-fewest wild pitches allowed in a single season as a team in program history.
Sarver, also a right-handed pitcher, was the 513th overall selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 19 games for the 49ers this season, he logged the sixth-most appearances. After missing almost two seasons recovering from injury, Sarver fanned 32 batters in 22.2 innings while issuing only five walks for a 6.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
